The UAE and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) markets represent a significant ecommerce opportunity for Indian brands looking to expand internationally. UAE ecommerce reached $9.2 billion in 2024, growing at 11% annually. Saudi Arabia is the largest GCC ecommerce market at $16 billion. Gulf customers have high purchasing power, strong brand consciousness, and a notable preference for international brands — particularly Indian D2C brands in fashion, beauty, home and food categories.
But Gulf ecommerce has operational challenges that are more similar to India than to Western markets — and that most Shopify documentation does not address. This guide covers the complete picture.
The Gulf ecommerce opportunity for Indian brands
The Indian diaspora in the GCC is approximately 8.5 million people — the largest Indian population outside India. This diaspora actively seeks Indian products, particularly in categories like traditional fashion, spices and Indian food products, Ayurvedic beauty, and artisanal home decor. For Indian Shopify merchants, the Gulf represents a natural international expansion market with minimal language and cultural adaptation required.
Beyond the diaspora, Gulf Arab customers themselves have become significant consumers of Indian fashion, jewellery and beauty products. Indian D2C brands with strong Instagram presence regularly receive order enquiries from UAE and Saudi-based customers through the India store. Setting up a properly configured Shopify experience for Gulf customers — with local currency, correct payment methods and accurate address handling — significantly improves conversion from this traffic.
Payment methods in UAE and Gulf
Payment preferences in the Gulf differ from both India and Western markets:
Credit and debit cards dominate online transactions in UAE (65–70% of orders), with significantly higher card penetration than India. Visa and Mastercard acceptance is essential. American Express is common among higher-spending UAE customers.
COD remains significant in UAE at approximately 35–40% of ecommerce orders — lower than India but still substantial. New-to-merchant UAE customers frequently prefer COD on first purchase. After a successful delivery, most UAE customers switch to card for repeat orders.
Buy now, pay later (BNPL) has grown rapidly in UAE. Tabby and Tamara are the dominant BNPL providers, particularly popular for fashion purchases above AED 200. Both have Shopify integrations.
Apple Pay and Google Pay have strong adoption among UAE's tech-savvy consumer base. Enable these if your Shopify payment gateway supports them — they improve mobile checkout conversion significantly.
For payment gateway, Telr and PayTabs are the most widely used gateways for UAE Shopify merchants. Both support AED transactions, have straightforward UAE business account verification, and integrate cleanly with Shopify's checkout.
The UAE address problem
UAE addresses do not follow a structured format equivalent to India's pincode system or the UK's postcode. UAE addresses typically consist of: emirate → city/area → community → building name → apartment number. But there is no standardised postcode, and the boundary between "emirate" and "city/area" is not always obvious to customers.
Common UAE address errors in Shopify checkouts:
- Emirate entered in the city field (customer types "Dubai" as city, leaves emirate blank)
- Area/community entered as city (customer types "Jumeirah" or "Al Quoz" as city)
- Variant spellings: "Abu Dhabi" vs "Abu Dabi", "Sharjah" vs "Sharja"
- Missing villa/flat numbers for newer developments
City Dropdown handles UAE address validation — replacing the free-text city field with a validated dropdown of UAE emirates, cities and major delivery zones. Customers select from a validated list rather than typing, ensuring the address format their courier requires. The app covers all seven UAE emirates and major delivery zones in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain.
Managing COD in UAE
UAE COD fraud patterns differ from India but are still present. The RTO rate for UAE COD orders is lower than India (typically 10–18% vs India's 20–35%) but still significant given the higher average order values in the UAE market.
UAE-specific COD risk patterns: apartment buildings with managed access where couriers cannot reach the customer without a scheduled appointment, customers ordering from business addresses where delivery is refused by reception, and an emerging pattern of "bracket shopping" (ordering multiple variants to try, returning most).
For UAE-focused stores, COD Blocker's cart value threshold is the most useful rule: requiring prepaid for orders above AED 300–500 (approximately ₹7,000–₹12,000) concentrates COD on lower-value orders where the risk per incident is lower.
Currency and pricing for Gulf markets
If you are running a Gulf-specific Shopify store, price in AED (UAE Dirham) or SAR (Saudi Riyal) rather than INR. Gulf customers strongly prefer to see prices in their local currency — conversion-rate data consistently shows that customers who see a price in USD or INR and must mentally convert convert at significantly lower rates than those who see local currency pricing.
Use Shopify Markets to set up a UAE/Gulf market with AED pricing. Update pricing quarterly based on current exchange rates. Set your AED prices at round numbers where possible — ₹1,499 translates cleanly to AED 65 or AED 70 rather than AED 64.87.
Logistics for UAE and Gulf fulfilment
Options for Indian merchants shipping to UAE and Gulf:
- Aramex: The most widely used courier for India-to-UAE shipments. Strong UAE last-mile delivery network, COD collection service available, 3–5 day delivery from India to UAE metros.
- DHL Express: Premium option for high-value items. 2–3 day delivery, reliable handling, global tracking. 40–60% more expensive than Aramex.
- India Post EMS: Budget option for lightweight items. 7–14 day delivery, no live tracking. Suitable only for price-sensitive categories where speed is not a priority.
For UAE-based fulfilment (if your volume justifies a local 3PL), several Indian 3PLs have UAE warehouses — Shiprocket, Delhivery Express and Ekart all have UAE operations that enable same-day and next-day delivery within the UAE.
