COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
Why does Shopify create duplicate customer accounts in the first place?
Shopify creates a new customer record each time someone checks out with a different email address or as a guest. A customer who orders three times with different email addresses has three records in your database. Over time this creates significant data quality problems โ inaccurate lifetime value, broken loyalty programme calculations and fragmented communication history.
What customer data is preserved when merging accounts?
CustomerMerge combines all orders from both accounts, all saved shipping addresses, all customer tags, loyalty points (if tracked via metafields), account notes and purchase history. The duplicate account is removed after the merge is confirmed. The primary account retains all historical data from both records.
Can a merge be reversed?
No โ merges are permanent. CustomerMerge shows a detailed preview of exactly what will be merged before you confirm, including all orders and data that will move to the primary account. Review the preview carefully before proceeding. If you are unsure, start with a small batch of obvious duplicates to build confidence before processing your full list.
