I oversold 40 gift hampers on Diwali because Shopify showed the bundle as in stock. One component had run out. I spent three days cancelling orders and handling angry customers.
When you create a bundle or gift set in Shopify, you set its stock as a single inventory number for the bundle product itself. Shopify has no mechanism to track the individual components that make up the bundle or to calculate bundle availability from component stock levels.
The result: your Diwali hamper shows as "50 in stock" in Shopify. But it contains three components. Component A has 50 units. Component B has 30 units. Component C has 12 units. Your real available bundle quantity is 12 — limited by Component C. But Shopify shows 50 to customers and you receive 50 orders for a bundle you can only fulfil 12 times.
This is not a niche problem. It affects every merchant who sells bundles, gift sets, kits or assortments — and the consequences are worst at high-traffic moments: Diwali, Navratri, Republic Day sales, product launches. These are the exact moments when you have the highest bundle volume and the most to lose from overselling.
Beyond Diwali, this problem affects subscription box merchants who bundle monthly assortments, beauty brands with "complete routine" sets, kitchenware brands with recipe kits, and any merchant whose product photography and marketing creates combinations that customers want to buy together.
Bundle Alerts lets you define the components of each bundle at the SKU level. For each bundle product in your Shopify store, you specify which component SKUs it contains and in what quantities. Bundle Alerts then continuously monitors the stock of each component and calculates the maximum fulfillable bundle quantity in real time.
When any component approaches your configured low-stock threshold, Bundle Alerts sends an alert — email, in-app notification, or both. When a component runs out entirely, Bundle Alerts can automatically hide the Add to Cart button for that bundle, preventing new orders from being placed for a bundle you cannot fulfil.
This two-layer approach — advance warning when components run low, automatic protection when components are gone — eliminates both the operational problem (overselling) and the customer experience problem (discovering out-of-stock after ordering).
